On this 21-day overland camping tour you visit the highlights of Namibia and Botswana. You will see the mighty Victoria Falls before you enter Namibia and enjoy the wildlife in the vast expanse of the Etosha National Park. You will discover the rugged beauty of Damaraland and the oranje dunes of the Namib Desert. You will go on a walk with the San people before you travel deep into the Okavango Delta. And then this comprehensive journey ends with a boat cruise in the Chobe National Park.

Day 1-2 Victoria Falls, Livingstone, Zambia

Your African tour starts at 2:00pm with a departure meeting before you reach the Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and you have two days to explore this area. Choose any of the adventure activities such as elephant safaris, white water rafting on the mighty Zambezi or a 111m bungee jump from the railway bridge. Explore the national park, swim in the Devil’s Pool or just be energised by the power of the rushing Zambezi River. All activities are optional and not included in the rate.

Day 3-4 Victoria Falls, Livingstone, Zambia - Caprivi, Namibia

Distance on day 3 & 4 approx. 200-300 km; driving time approx. 3-4h

Today you leave Zambia, cross at Sesheke and drive to the Caprivi Strip, a narrow section of land in northern Namibia bordering Angola, Zambia and Botswana. You visit the Popa Falls and spend two days on game drives while traveling west through this tropical area of woodlands, riverine forests and swamps. There are many elephants, though not easily spotted in the dense vegetation. Other creatures living in this area include hippo, crocodile, buffalo, common impala, red lechwe, sable antelope, sitatunga and wild dog.

Day 5 Caprivi, Namibia - Rundu, Namibia

Distance approx. 200 km; driving time approx. 3h

After a morning enjoying the abundant birdlife that surrounds the camp, the road takes you directly west along the Kavango River. Scattered villages of grass huts, farmers tending animals, locals selling wooden crafts and fruit are a common sight. You stop for the night at the riverside camp in Rundu with a spectacular sunset.

Day 6-7 Rundu, Namibia - Etosha National Park, Namibia

Distance on day 6 approx. 450 km; driving time approx. 5-6h

Today you drive into the dry northern region of Namibia, the Etosha National Park. This reserve surrounds the vast (5 000km²) Etosha pan, locally called “the great white place of dry water”. Waterholes on the edge of the pan attract all sorts of wild life and it is easy to spot game in the sparse vegetation. Etosha is known for great sightings of elephant, antelope and lions as well as the endangered black-faced Impala, tsessebe and gemsbok. You take game drives around the huge dry pan to find the elephants, herds of antelope and lions round the waterholes before you camp at Namutoni, Halali or Okaukuejo. Two of these rest camps have flood-lit waterholes so you can watch as animals come for nighttime drinks.

Day 8 Etosha National Park, Namibia - Brandberg, Namibia

Distance approx. 600 km; driving time approx. 7-8h

The next stop is the Brandberg mountain, its King’s Stone peak rising 2600m above the arid flat landscape. Here you camp next to the dry Ugab River bed, home to the rare desert elephants. You explore the mountains on foot with local guides, who lead you through this region adorned with rock art including the famous “White Lady”.

Day 9 Brandberg, Namibia - Spitskoppe, Namibia

Distance approx. 200 km; driving time approx. 3h

You drive through some beautiful desert landscapes as you move south towards the huge granite domes towering above the flat desert at Spitskoppe. You set up camp at the base of these boulders and explore the area on foot. The silence and wide open spaces add to the mystical splendour and you enjoy a magnificent sunset and star-studded night skies.

Day 10-11 Spitskoppe, Namibia - Swakopmund, Namibia

Distance on day 10 approx. 250 km; driving time approx. 3-4h

You cross open plains towards the Skeleton Coast where you visit the breath-taking (literally) Cape Cross seal colony before arriving at the coastal town of Swakopmund. You have a day free to explore the colonial architecture, quaint shops and restaurants of the town. Active guests can try dune boarding, sea kayaking or sky diving (optional activity, not included in the rate). You enjoy evening restaurant meals on own expense.

Day 12-13 Swakopmund, Namibia - Namib Desert, Namibia

Distance on day 12 approx. 350 km; driving time approx. 5h

Surreal, lunar landscapes surround the town of Swakopmund and you visit these as you drive towards the Namib Desert with its gigantic red sand dunes. You will walk to Sossusvlei, explore the Sesriem Canyon and watch dramatic sunsets over the world’s highest sand dunes.

Day 14 Namib Desert, Namibia - Windhoek, Namibia

Distance approx. 350 km; driving time approx. 4-5h

Windhoek is the capital and largest city in Namibia. Its charm lies in its mix of African and European cultures, the friendliness of the locals and an eclectic combination of modern and German colonial-influenced architecture. You explore the city and sample the cuisine (and local beer) at a restaurant - at your own expense.

Day 15 Windhoek, Namibia - Kalahari, Botswana

Distance approx. 550 km; driving time approx. 7-8h

After crossing into Botswana you overnight in the heart of the Kalahari. You take a walk with the local Bushmen to learn useful bush skills such as tracking animals and making fire.

Day 16-18 Kalahari, Botswana - Okavango Delta, Botswana

Distance on day 16 approx. 300 km; driving time approx. 4-5h

You camp in Maun for a night in preparation for the journey into the Okavango River delta.
The Okavango Delta is the only inland delta in the world. The Okavango River never reaches the sea but instead spreads out over the vast desert sands of the Kalahari providing nourishment for human and animals. You journey deep into the Okavango Delta on mekoro (traditional canoes) to explore in a maze of crystal clear lagoons and channels. You camp wild on remote islands for two nights and enjoy bush walks, swimming and the birdlife in this pristine wilderness area.

Day 19 Okavango Delta, Botswana - Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

Distance approx. 350 km; driving time approx. 4-5h

The shimmering saltpans of Makgadikgadi are the size of Switzerland and appear as an endless white nothingness. The dry season allows for quiet evenings under a canopy of stars. The rain season brings a dramatic change as the pans transforms with frantically feeding water birds and great herds of zebra, wildebeest and springbok.

Day 20 Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana - Chobe National Park, Kasane, Botswana

Distance approx. 300 km; driving time approx. 4-5h

You turn north through the Chobe Forest Reserve to Kasane where you will camp. Chobe National Park is famous for large herds of elephants and buffalo. The reserve’s vegetation is influenced by water and vegetation types here vary from swamps to woodlands. You may spot anything from elephant, hippo, crocodiles and impala to the rare wild dog and sitatunga. Your afternoon is spent on a boat cruise in the Chobe National Park.

Day 21 Chobe National Park, Kasane, Botswana - Victoria Falls, Livingstone, Zambia

Distance approx. 100 km; driving time approx. 1-2h

This morning you drive to Zambia where the tour ends at Livingstone’s airport. You can choose to stay a few days longer to experience the Victoria Falls and the many activities in this area or extend your trip to see more of Africa.

  • How big is the group and where are my fellow travellers from?

    - Group sizes vary however there is a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 travellers per group.
    - Travellers are from all over the world and from all walks of life.

  • Is there an age limit on tour?

    - Generally the age limit is 18 to 65 years. But if you are a youngster of 12 years and older travelling with your parents or if you are over the age of 65 years and can provide a doctors note confirming that you are fit enough to take part, you’re welcome on tour as well.

  • Where does the group overnight while on tour?

    - 15 nights are spent in spacious 2-man dome tents (2,2 x 2,2m) on campsites with good ablution and other facilities.
    - 2 nights are spent in spacious 2-man dome tents (2,2 x 2,2m) in basic bush camps with very basic ablutions (bush toilet + bucket shower).
    - 3 nights are spent in twin rooms / chalets at nice guesthouses / lodges.

  • What vehicle is used on tour?

    - For the longer distances we make use of safari trucks that have been reconstructed in order to cope with the demanding African conditions. Big windows guarantee first-class game and nature viewing and a spacious interior with comfortable seats offer a high travel comfort. The back part of the vehicle is used for luggage, food and camping equipment.

  • What meals are included and what food can be expected on tour?

    - Meals are included as indicated in the itinerary.
    - Breakfast usually consists of cereals, toast and jam. Light lunches like salads and sandwiches are prepared en-route while for dinner the guide prepares stews, BBQs, vegetables and different pasta or rice dishes.

  • How much extra money do I have to take along?

    - We recommend that you take along some extra cash for drinks, snacks and souvenirs. 10-15 USD per day is usually sufficient (depending on your spending habits). In addition you should allow some extra money for the optional activities you might want to participate in.

  • Do I need visa for this tour?

    - Citizens of all nationalities need to contact the respective embassies of their travel destination to check the visa regulations.
    - In general European citizens do not require a visa for Namibia and Botswana. For Zambia a visa is usually required.
    - It is the sole responsibility of every traveller to be in possession of the required documents and visa that allows them to enter their holiday destination.

  • Do I need vaccinations for this tour?

    - As Livingstone, northern Namibia and Botswana are situated within a malaria area, we would recommend some precautions. Please speak to your doctor or travel clinic about the different prophylaxis and their effects and side effects.
    - This safari starts and ends in Zambia which is within a yellow fever region. In case you will return to South Africa after the tour, a proof of yellow fever vaccination will be required upon entering.
    - Although none of the countries visited on tour require proof of immunization against Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and Hepatitis A & B, we nevertheless recommend those vaccinations.
