Safaris in Rwanda

This tiny agricultural country just south of the equator lies at high altitude and is one of two countries that offer the opportunity to see the last wild gorillas in their natural habitat.

Rwanda safaris

The devastating genocide in the 1990‘s has severely limited development and tourism to this country but some highlights during a Safari in Rwanda are:

  • A visit to the last mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park
  • Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park
  • Visiting the genocide museum and memorial in the capital Kigali

Things to see in Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park

The national park in the Virunga Mountains borders the Congo and Uganda and it is here where researcher and conservationist Dian Fossey lived from 1967 to 1985. The seven gorilla families living in the park are accustomed to humans and it is awe-inspiring to witness how a group of up to 45 gorillas interact and socialise.

Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre

This museum presents the history and the motives behind the Rwandan mass ethnic cleansing in 1994 in which more than one million Tutsis were murdered: a sombre but essential visit.

Nyungwe National Park

This national park consists of a mountain and rainforest network and is Africa’s largest protected mountain rainforest. It is home to 200 tree varieties, 280 bird species, 100 types of orchids and 13 species of primates including chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys. The chimpanzees and acrobatic Ruwenzori Colobus are accustomed to humans and is the biggest attraction of this park.

Best time to visit

It is suitable to visit Rwanda any time of the year. In the mountains rain is possible throughout the year, without it the rainforest would disappear. The heaviest rainfalls are expected in April and May, typical for East Africa and the warmest months are from November till February.

Best Time To Visit Rwanda

A trip to Rwanda can definitely be combined with a visit to neighbouring countries Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda. Transfer by road to Uganda or take a cheap flight to Kenya and Tanzania.
