On this 21-day accommodated overland tour you will start from the breath-taking Victoria Falls and cross the border to Zambia from where you travel to the South Luangwa National Park and visit the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre. You then cross to Malawi and spend some nights at Lake Malawi before you continue your journey through some spectacular mountain passes to Tanzania. By local ferry you will travel from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar island where you will spend three days. The journey then takes you to Lushoto and Arusha. You also have the option of going on a 4-day excursion to the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater before the tour ends in Nairobi, the largest city and capital of Kenya.

Day 1 Victoria Falls, Zambia - Lusaka, Zambia

Distance approx. 500 km; driving time approx. 7-8h

Leaving behind the natural wonder of Victoria Falls you begin your expedition. After passing Livingstone you travel towards the bustling Zambian capital of Lusaka. You will notice the vegetation becoming sub-tropical and the roads a little rougher.

Day 2 Lusaka, Zambia - Chipata, Zambia

Distance approx. 750 km; driving time approx. 10-12h

A long drive through the lush countryside leads to the sprawling town of Chipata, the gateway to the South Luangwa National Park. Zambia is truly African and a change from the more Western ways of Southern Africa.

Day 3 Chipata, Zambia - South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Distance approx. 150 km; driving time approx. 6-8h (excl. game drives)

Early in the morning you drive from Chipata to the border of the South Luangwa National Park where you spend the next two nights on the banks of the Luangwa River. Hippos and other animals can often be spotted from the camp’s bar. In the afternoon you join a sunset game drive in bush.

Day 4 South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

You can join an optional game drive in the South Luangwa National Park. The park is known for its high concentration of leopards and hippos. After lunch you visit a community-managed textile project and a local tribal village.

Possible alternative route:
During the rainy season (please contact the Elefant-Tours team) it is not advisable to visit the South Luangwa National Park. After consulting with the tour participants an alternative route will be taken and the two nights will either be spent in Malawi or Zanzibar.

 

Day 5 | South Luangwa National Park, Zambia - Lilongwe, Malawi

Distance approx. 350 km; driving time approx. 8-10h

Today you visit the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, Malawi’s sanctuary for rescued, orphaned and injured wild animals and meet some of the resident animals. The centre is set in 180 ha of beautiful woodland. You can also explore Lilongwe on a city tour (optional activity, not included in the rate).

Day 6-7 Lilongwe, Malawi - Lake Malawi, Kande Beach, Malawi

Distance on day 6 approx. 400 km; driving time approx. 6-7h

This morning you have the opportunity to participate in a two hour city tour – an optional activity, not included in the rate - before the scenic drive to Kande beach. You will spend the next two days enjoying the many optional activities such as horse riding and different water sports (optional activities, not included in the rate) available here. You will join a guided village walk where you meet the local people and learn more about the daily life in Malawi.

Day 8 Lake Malawi, Kande Beach, Malawi - Lake Malawi, Chitimba Beach, Malawi

Distance approx. 250 km; driving time approx. 4-5h

You travel further north and spend your last day in Malawi at Chitimba beach where you relax at the sandy beach or take part in a variety of water sports (optional activities, not included in the rate). For those who have had enough of the beach, a short hike to the Manchawe Falls is also possible. Manchawe Falls (4km from Livingstonia) is 50m high waterfall and covers a cave where locals hid from slave traders.

Day 9 Chitimba Beach, Malawi -Iringa, Tanzania

Distance approx. 650 km; driving time approx. 10-11h

You travel to Iringa in the tea-growing highland area. The town was established as a German army base and is famous for its woven baskets. This evening you have dinner in a local Masai hut to enjoy a traditional Tanzanian evening.

Day 10 Iringa, Tanzania - Mikumi, Tanzania

Distance approx. 300 km; driving time approx. 5-6h

Today’s journey takes you to the Mikumi National Park. Mikumi is home to more than 400 bird species, lion, zebra, wildebeest, elephant and eland, the largest antelope on earth. Join an optional afternoon game drive in the park.

Day 11 Mikumi, Tanzania - Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Distance approx. 250 km; driving time approx. 4-5h

Today’s journey takes you out of the cool highland region to the humid Indian Ocean coastal city of Dar es Salaam. Meaning ‘house of peace’ in Arabic, Dar es Salaam is the economic and trade capital of Tanzania. Dodoma is the official capital city.

Day 12-14 Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - Zanzibar

Approx. 2-3h ferry transport on day 12

A local ferry will take you to ancient Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar where you spend the first night exploring the historical and unique architecture of this town. Visit spice and seafood markets. The following day you are transferred to the northern part of the island where you will spend two days at the beach. More active guests can book activities like swimming with dolphins, scuba diving and snorkelling.

Day 15 Nungwi Beach, Zanzibar - Lushoto, Tanzania

Approx. 2-3h ferry transport + distance approx. 250 km; driving time approx. 6-7h

Today you leave Zanzibar and catch a ferry back to Dar es Salaam before you head into the mountains to Lushoto at 1200m. Lushoto is a leafy, cool town situated in the Usambara Mountains. Here you will have a chance to hike in the surrounding mountains, see rivers and forests and soil conservation projects or just relax.

Day 16 Lushoto, Tanzania - Arusha, Tanzania

Today you take a scenic drive drive to Arusha. Arusha is the starting point for many Tanzania safari and is situated very close to the Ngorongoro crater and the world-famous Serengeti National Park.

Day 17-19 Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

These four days are set aside for the optional 3-night camping excursion to the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. This area has one of the largest animal populations in Africa. The excursion is conducted in 4x4 safari vehicles suitable for the challenging roads in the parks. Those that are not joining the optional excursion have the chance to absorb some of the fascinating local culture and can also book various optional activities such as day trips into the Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater, a Lake Manyara game drive, hiking or a village tour.

Day 20 Serengeti, Tanzania - Arusha, Tanzania

Today on the optional Serengeti and Ngorongoro excursion return from their trip and meet up with the rest of the group in Arusha, where there will be time to share stories. In the afternoon you visit the Maasai Cultural Museum and a snake park. You can also book a camel ride to a local Masai village (optional activity, not included in the rate).

Day 21 Arusha, Tanzania - Nairobi, Kenya

After crossing the border to Kenya you continue to travel towards busy Nairobi where your tour ends. Usually the group spends the last night together, having dinner at one of Nairobi’s excellent restaurants at own expense.

  • How big is the group and where are my fellow travellers from?

    - Group sizes vary however there is a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 20 travellers per group.
    - Travellers are from all over the world and from all walks of life.

  • Is there an age limit on tour?

    - Generally the age limit is 16 to 65 years. But please feel free to contact us if you are a youngster travelling with your parents or if you are over the age of 65 years and we will gladly contact the local tour operator to see if we can’t work out something for you.

  • Where does the group overnight while on tour?

    - 17 nights are spent in twin rooms / permanent tents / chalets at nice camps / hotels / lodges.
    - On the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Excursion 3 nights are spent in spacious 2-man dome tents (2,2 x 2,2m) on campsites with ablution facilities.

  • What mode of transport is used on tour?

    - We make use of safari trucks that have been reconstructed in order to cope with the demanding African conditions. Big windows guarantee first-class game and nature viewing and a spacious interior with comfortable seats offer a high travel comfort. The back part of the vehicle is used for luggage, food and other equipment.
    - A local ferry is used for the transfers between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
    - A 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof is used for the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Excursion.

  • What meals are included and what food can be expected on tour?

    - Meals are included as indicated in the itinerary.
    - Breakfast usually consists of cereals, toast and jam. Light lunches like salads and sandwiches are prepared en-route while for dinner the guide prepares stews, BBQs, vegetables and different pasta or rice dishes.

  • How much extra money do I have to take along?

    - We recommend that you take along some extra cash for drinks, snacks and souvenirs. 10-15 USD per day is usually sufficient (depending on your spending habits). In addition you should allow some extra money for the optional activities you might want to participate in.

  • Do I need visa for this tour?

    - Citizens of all nationalities need to contact the respective embassies of their travel destination to check the visa regulations.
    - In general European citizens do not require a visa for Malawi. For Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya a visa is usually required.
    - It is the sole responsibility of every traveller to be in possession of the required documents and visa that allows them to enter their holiday destination.

  • Do I need vaccinations for this tour?

    - As all countries visited are situated within a malaria area, we would recommend some precautions. Please speak to your doctor or travel clinic about the different prophylaxis and their effects and side effects.
    - On this tour you will be crossing borders within a yellow fever region, which is why proof of vaccination is required.
    - Although none of the destinations visited on tour require proof of immunization against Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and Hepatitis A & B, we nevertheless recommend those vaccinations.
